MATCH PREVIEW - LUTON TOWN v MANCHESTER UNITED
TRIVIA
Venue - Luton Town Football Stadium, Luton
Kick Off - Tuesday, September 22 - 20:15 GMT
Wednesday, September 23 - 00:45 IST
Manchester United lost their opening fixture in the Premier League to Crystal Palace in what was probably one of the worst performances from the Red Devils in recent times and it was a huge let down to start the season with a defeat and it may have hurt our ambitions for this season. United showed no passion and Crystal Palace deservedly won again at Old Trafford. It is up to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now to lift team spirits and make them deliver against Luton Town. Carabao Cup is a trophy the Red Devils could realistically win this season and they need to put the effort in to have a chance.
As for Luton Town, they have enjoyed a strong start to the Championship campaign as they have won their first two fixtures and currently sit third in the table with wins over Barnsley and Derby County. They defeated Norwich 3 - 1 in the first round courtesy of a hat-trick from James Collins and got past Reading by a solitary goal from Jordan Clark to book a third round cup tie with Manchester United who will travel down to play them. It should be an easy win for United as their quality should be no match to what United have...
TEAM FORM
Manchester United lost their only friendly to Aston Villa 1 - 0 and before that were underwhelming in the Europa League possibly due to fatigue as they had to rely on late strikes to win games but lost the semi-final against the then to be champions Sevilla. On Saturday, they lost their opening fixture against Crystal Palace 3 - 1 and honestly could have been a lot more. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look to turn this around against Luton.
Luton Town are undefeated in 11 matches, a run that extends from the beginning of July and have started the new season in England's second tier with two straight wins along with the wins in the first and second rounds of the Carabao Cup.
TEAM NEWS
Luton Town are expected to be without Dan Potts , Brendan Galloway and Eunan O Kane. Rest of the squad is fit to go.
As for Manchester United Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe will be absent so it could mean that youngster Teden Mengi may be among the starters as Ole may look to play a mix of youth and experience. Nemanja Matic was absent in the opening fixture and there is no news on his availability for the fixture. Mason Greenwood should be fit to start after appearing for 45 minutes in the defeat against Palace.
PREDICTED TEAM
This is a chance for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hand Dean Henderson his full debut as he looks to challenge David de Gea for the number one spot this season. Teden Mengi may start along with Eric Bailly in defense but is more likely to make an appearance off the bench. Diogo Dalot could also start (if the manager trusts him enough). Donny van de Beek could also be given his first full start against Luton. The formation should remain the same i.e 4 - 2 - 3 - 1.
PLAYER TO WATCH OUT FOR
DONNY VAN DE BEEK - The Dutchman made a flying start to his United career, scoring on debut albeit in a defeat and looked like the best player on the pitch when he came on. He should start the game against Luton and get some minutes under his belt and could be the main source of creativity in the midfield.
VERDICT
Varun's prediction : Luton Town 0 - 4 Manchester United
Hitanshu's prediction : Luton Town 0 - 3 Manchester United
